Sierra Madre Playhouse’s Family @ The Playhouse Series Offers a Range of Delightful Performances
Sierra Madre Playhouse – a charming historic theater currently celebrating its centennial – is offering this spring a slate of delightful and affordable family-friendly performances designed for families with children of all ages. The Family @ The Playhouse series features a total of nine performances of four distinctive programs presented from March to May 2024, on Saturdays, at 11 am, with one show also featuring Friday night and Sunday matinee performances. The line-up includes lively jazz interpretations of tunes from Disney animated films; an enthralling magic show; an interactive program blending classical music and storytelling; and four performances of the famed Bob Baker Marionette Theatre.
The series includes Family @ The Playhouse: Percussive Storytelling, which breaks down musical barriers with a delightful interactive program featuring an engaging mix of classical music and storytelling presented by Grammy Award-winning multi-percussionist and composer Cory Hills (Saturday, March 9, 2024, 11 am). A global sensation, Percussive Storytelling has enriched more than 175,000 children in 10 countries. Hills, known for his creative interdisciplinary projects, has released two award-winning albums (The Lost Bicycle, Drum Factory), and three children’s books (The Lost Bicycle, Beatrice and the POGs, Beatrice and the Search for the Orb). Family @ The Playhouse: Matt Johnson & the New Jet Set Swingin’ the Disney Songbookfeatures a quartet led by drummer Matt Johnson and an award-winning vocalist delivering beloved hits from timeless Disney animated films in a retro-cool jazz style (Friday, March 22, 7:30 pm; Saturday, March 23, 11 am; Sunday, March 24, 2024, 2pm). Johnson, also the show’s amiable host, provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the unforgettable songs that have become the heart and soul of classic Disney movies. From instantly recognizable tunes from Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and Toy Story and to heartwarming melodies from Dumbo and Coco, this enchanting and nostalgic musical adventure through the decades, enhanced by memorable visuals, will delight Disney fans of all ages. With evening, morning and matinee performances to choose from, it’s the perfect show for a date night, family outing, or relaxing afternoon. Tickets are $12, $25, and $35.
Family @ The Playhouse: Arty Loon weaves Arty Loon’s whimsical magic, amazing illusions, gravity-defying juggling, and charming puppetry into a fabulous spectacle that brings smiles and laughter to youngsters and the young at heart alike (Saturday, April 6, 2024, 11 am). Tickets are $10.
This spring Sierra Madre Playhouse also presents four performances of Family @ The Playhouse: Bob Baker Marionette Theatre – A Morning at the Theater (Saturdays, April 13, April 20, May 4 and May 11, 11am). The Bob Baker Marionette Theatre is a Southland treasure long recognized for inspiring imagination and introducing children to the wonder of puppetry and theater. “A Morning at the Theater” includes an engaging puppetry performance, fun hands-on interactive activities, and surprising behind-the-scenes puppetry insights. The Bob Baker Marionette Theater has captivated children and families for half a century with the legacy of its founder Bob Baker continuing to live on through the hands and hearts of the company’s dedicated puppeteers. Tickets are $10.
The intimate 99-seat Sierra Madre Playhouse is located in the heart of quaint Sierra Madre, nestled in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills.
